Ramadan with kids: 12 ideas that actually work
Simple ways to make the month feel special at home, even before they're old enough to fast.
5 minute read · SunnahPanda
Children aren't required to fast until they reach puberty, but they can still be part of Ramadan every single day. The goal is simple: by Eid, they should feel that Ramadan is the best month of the year.
Ideas to try
- 1
Decorate together
Lanterns, paper moons and fairy lights. Let the kids choose where everything goes.
- 2
A good deed every day
Print the 30 Days of Good Deeds sheet and tick one off each evening after iftar.
- 3
Practice fasts
Older children can try fasting until lunchtime, then until Asr. Celebrate every attempt.
- 4
Their own iftar job
Setting out the dates, pouring the water or calling everyone to the table.
- 5
A charity jar
Put spare coins in through the month and decide together where to give it before Eid.
- 6
Story time
A short story about a prophet each night before bed.
- 7
Learn one du'a
Choose one short du'a for the month and say it together every day.
- 8
Moon watching
Look for the new moon at the start and end of the month. It feels like an adventure.
- 9
Cook for a neighbour
Make a plate of iftar for someone nearby, Muslim or not.
- 10
Taraweeh for a little while
Take them to the masjid for a few rak'ahs. Leave before they get tired.
- 11
Eid cards
Colour and write cards for family and teachers in the last week.
- 12
Countdown to Eid
A paper chain with one link to tear off each day.

SunnahPanda tip
Pick three or four ideas, not all twelve. A calm month you enjoy beats a busy one you're too tired to remember.
