Teaching your child to pray
A gentle, no-pressure path from standing beside you on the mat to praying all five on their own.
6 minute read · SunnahPanda
The Prophet ﷺ said to teach children to pray when they are seven. Most families start much earlier than that, simply by letting little ones stand on the mat beside them. That's a lovely way to begin: no rules yet, just being close to you while you pray.
A path that works for most families
- 1
Ages 2 to 4: just join in
Give them their own small mat. Let them copy your movements, wander off and come back. You're showing them that prayer is a normal, happy part of the day.
- 2
Ages 4 to 6: learn the words
Teach Allahu Akbar, Surah al-Fatihah and a short surah such as al-Ikhlas. Learn a little each week, a line at a time.
- 3
Around 7: one prayer a day
Pick the easiest prayer for your routine, often Maghrib, and make it theirs. Pray it together every day.
- 4
Build up to five
Add one prayer at a time. A tracker on the fridge with stars to colour in turns it into something to look forward to.
- 5
Learn the times
Show them how to read a prayer timetable for your area, or use an app together. Knowing when each prayer starts gives them ownership.

SunnahPanda tip
Keep it warm. A child who connects prayer with a hug and a smile will keep coming back to the mat long after the star charts stop.
The five daily prayers
- Fajr: before sunrise, 2 rak'ahs
- Dhuhr: after midday, 4 rak'ahs
- Asr: in the afternoon, 4 rak'ahs
- Maghrib: just after sunset, 3 rak'ahs
- Isha: at night, 4 rak'ahs
