The five pillars of Islam, explained for kids
What each pillar means, in words a six-year-old can understand, plus a way to remember them.
4 minute read · SunnahPanda
A pillar is a big, strong post that holds a building up. Islam has five pillars that hold up our faith, like the five pillars holding up a house. If one is missing, the house isn't as strong.
- 1
Shahadah: believing
We believe and say that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger.
- 2
Salah: praying
We pray five times every day, to talk to Allah and to thank Him.
- 3
Zakah: giving
Grown-ups who have enough money give a small part of it every year to people who need it.
- 4
Sawm: fasting
In the month of Ramadan, grown-ups don't eat or drink from dawn until sunset.
- 5
Hajj: the journey
Once in their life, if they are able, Muslims travel to the Ka'bah in Makkah.

SunnahPanda tip
Hold up one hand and give each finger a pillar. Thumb for Shahadah, then Salah, Zakah, Sawm and Hajj on the little finger.
